Primary Acquired Cold Urticaria (Also known as Acquired Cold Urticaria or simply Cold Urticaria) - This is the form the Dr. most likely diagnosed you with. Primary Cold Urticaria, means there are NO under lying causes for this condition. Mono, bee stings, allergic reactions are all known to cause this type of Cold Urticaria. There is a chance that you will outgrow this, it can disappear as fast as it came.
Secondary Acquired Cold Urticaria (Also knows as Secondary Cold Urticaria)-This is a form of Cold Urticaria that is caused by an underlying health condition. Secondary Cold Urticaria can be caused by thyroid disorders, food allergies including celiacs disease, syphilis or even cancer. Once the underlying condition is treated, then this form of Cold Urticaria will go away. I realize you are seeing the word cancer and are probably freaking out right now, but please know that in cases of Cold Urticaria, cancer as a cause is less than 20%. Your Dr. SHOULD have ran labs after diagnosing the condition, and this is one thing he should be checking for. If s/he didn't ask them too, if they refuse, this is a red flag, and you need to find another Dr.!
Delayed Cold Urticaria-Just as the name suggests this type of Cold Urticaria does not show the signs like others. The signs and symptoms can come up anywhere from 2-24 hours after exposure to cold. Most often this will leave patients wondering what is causing there symptoms as they may make up the next day covered in hives and swelling, not realizing it is from the previous days events. This is why journaling is SOOO important.
Localized Cold Urticaria-This subtype of Cold Urticaria fascinates me (full disclaimer I am a medical nerd and mean no disrespect towards anyone that may have this type.) With this type of Cold Urticaria, the condition is limited to ONE part of the body. It can be the face, a hand, a leg, but only one body part will be affected by CU, hence the name Localized Cold Urticaria.
